Literacy Pittsburgh teaches math and other skills related to construction in partnership with area training programs. You can learn more by contacting us or these programs directly:
- Breaking the Chains of Poverty offered by the A. Phillip Randolph Institute. In partnership with the United Steelworkers, this program supports individuals and families with the training, tools, and theory to give them a competitive edge in the high-demand job areas of Construction and Energy.
- Introduction to the Construction Trades Pre-Apprenticeship. This free hands-on training offers participants a paid stipend and allows them to develop their knowledge of the construction industry as well as skills that can be applied across all building trades. The course includes career exposure through field trips to state-of-the-art union training facilities, hands-on activities, and meetings with expert craftspeople representing local trade unions. Offered in partnership with Pittsburgh Gateways, Pittsburgh International Airport, and Partner4Work.

Reimagine Reentry. This six-week, 120-hour building trades pre-apprenticeship program includes hands-on learning of construction skills, regular reentry coaching, and the opportunity to earn multiple certificates, including OSHA-10 and first aid. This program also offers participants a paid stipend.

We can also help you explore and apply for training programs at New Century Careers, Master Builders Association, Rosedale Technical College, and Catalyst Connection to name just a few.
This program is part of Literacy Pittsburgh's Ready & Relevant initiative, which is made possible through community project funding from the FY22 federal spending bill. The total cost of the Ready & Relevant program is $1,790,803. $675,000 (38%) is funded through a Federal Community Project grant. The other $1,115,883 (62%) is funded through other public contracts and private donations.
