Help children in grades K-4 in the Pittsburgh area improve their reading skills and self-confidence as a volunteer literacy tutor.

I'M READY TO HELP

Young girl in classroom

You can help a child flourish this school year by tutoring elementary-age children in one of seven Pittsburgh-area districts. No teaching experience is required. Your enthusiasm, patience, and compassion are far more important! Your student will cherish the time you spend together. We have two school-based tutoring programs available.

Oasis Tutoring engages volunteers age 50 and older to assist children in grades K-4 who have been identified by classroom teachers as needing extra support in reading. As an Oasis tutor you will:

  • Complete twelve hours of free training where you will learn ways to draw on a child's experiences to create simple stories that form the basis for reading activities. All materials are provided free of charge.
  • Meet with your child one-on-one each week during the school day for 30-45 minutes.
  • Participate in additional learning opportunities throughout the year. You will have a chance to meet fellow tutors and learn tips and techniques to make your volunteer tutoring experience a rewarding one.

Oasis Tutoring is offered in the Duquesne City School District, the Environmental Charter School, Pittsburgh Public Schools, Wilkinsburg School District, and the Woodland Hills School District.

One child, one tutor, one school year. Two lives forever changed.

ERAS Tutoring is an exciting pilot program open to volunteers of all ages. This innovative tutoring opportunity incorporates AI to generate lesson plans based on a student's progress and learning needs, minimizing the prep work you need to do as a volunteer.  As an ERAS tutor you will:

  • Volunteer as a reading tutor for students in grades K-3.
  • Meet with a child twice weekly for 30 minutes during the school day or afterschool, depending on location. The total time commitment is 2-3 hours each week.
  • Complete a free four-hour training session.
  • You will receive ongoing training and support.
  • A high school diploma is required for this volunteer opportunity.

Current participating sites include Clairton City Schools, Catalyst Charter Academy, and Lincoln and Faison in Pittsburgh Public Schools.

Oasis is a national organization based in St. Louis that is dedicated to successful aging through lifelong learning, active lifestyles and volunteer engagement. Literacy Pittsburgh has managed the local Oasis Tutoring program since 2013.
