Carey joined Literacy Pittsburgh in 2018 as Chief Executive Officer. With the help of a dedicated team of talented professionals, she has grown the organization’s staff and budget, increased the organization’s profile in the community, strengthened relationships with elected officials, built collaborative partnerships with employers and workforce development providers, and developed innovative programs to help students obtain family-sustaining employment. Carey’s leadership supports a high performing, goal-oriented team that relies on creativity, innovation, and an unwavering focus on student success.
She has an extensive background in education, policy, and community development and in leading at the local, regional, and state level. Prior to her appointment at Literacy Pittsburgh, she served as Executive Director of the Pennsylvania Early Learning Investment Commission where she provided leadership recruiting business leaders from across the Commonwealth to support increasing investment in early childhood education. For more than 12 years Carey served as Deputy and then Executive Director of A+ Schools. She was previously the Executive Director of South Side Local Development Company and began her career at the Mon Valley Initiative.
Carey is a graduate of Temple University and holds a Master of Social Work and a Master of Public and International Affairs from the University of Pittsburgh. She is a Certified Economic Development Professional and a graduate of the Education Policy and Leadership Center’s Education and Policy Fellowship.
She serves on the boards of Catalyst Academy Charter School, Partner4Work, and the Birmingham Foundation. She is an Advisory Board Member for Rosedale Technical College. Carey resides in Pittsburgh’s South Side neighborhood with her family.
