The Diversity Visa (DV) program, also known as the Green Card Lottery, helps people from countries with low immigration rates to the U.S. become permanent residents. Each year, the U.S. government selects up to 50,000 winners through a random lottery system.
Farida had the chance to be selected in 2020. She completed all the administrative, judicial, and health procedures before receiving an appointment for the interview at the U.S. Consulate in Algeria. The interview was fruitful, resulting in a favorable opinion being granted.
Upon Farida's arrival at the Washington D.C. airport, she was directed to the immigration office, where the Social Security (SS) process was explained. The Social Security card arrived after seven business days. Following this, she submitted the application for obtaining the Green Card, and this card arrived a month later.
As a Green Card holder, if Farida wishes to become a U.S. Citizen, she must first live in the United States for at least five (5) years. During this time, she must follow the law, pay taxes, and show good moral character. After meeting these requirements, Farida can apply for naturalization. She will need to pass an interview, an English test, and a civics test about U.S. history and government. If approved, she will take the Oath of Allegiance and officially become a U.S. Citizen!
"Literacy is a powerful tool for success," says Farida. "The Literacy Pittsburgh program is helping me improve my English skills. Whether you are new to the city or want to build confidence in reading, writing, or speaking, learning English can open doors to better jobs, education, and daily life. By studying English, you can connect more easily with your community and reach your goals. Don’t wait! Pittsburgh is full of opportunities to grow through literacy!"
