Literacy Pittsburgh helps to build and rebuild the Pittsburgh region through our participation in the PIT2Work program. Several local organizations have formed a solid partnership to help individuals find a career path in the trades. PIT2Work, hosted by the Pittsburgh International Airport in partnership with Partner4Work and Gateways Pittsburgh, provides an opportunity to learn about the trades, gain skills, and make connections.
PIT2Work is an intensive, five-week, no-cost training program that immerses men and women in the trades and provides them with the skills to start a new career. The program delivers a host of important construction lessons, math brush-up, construction site visits, mentoring, time with union partners, plus hands-on experience at the construction site of the new airport terminal. Participants receive a daily stipend and earn trade certifications.
Literacy Pittsburgh delivers lessons in construction math and critical thinking skills to help prepare participants for the workforce. Many adults have not had a formal math review in years. This course allows students to review construction math as well as apply skills like fractions, geometry/angles, and measurement. Literacy Pittsburgh is proud to offer the math component to each program cohort.
Many students who enroll in this program leave with skills that allow them to enter a pre-apprenticeship program in a trade of their choice. Others progress toward that goal while working in construction and using the knowledge they gleaned from attending the program.
One recent graduate, Lem Coleman stated, “The trades maintain Pittsburgh. I am so excited to be a part of this! This training opened many opportunities for me.” Another recent graduate of the program shared, “I needed a change in my life. A close friend suggested this program to me. It has helped me so much. I am now ready to get out and work!”
