At Literacy Pittsburgh, caring teachers and tutors will help you study for United States citizenship and guide you through the process. 

You can take citizenship classes online or in person.

We can help you to:

  • understand what is required for the citizenship application
  • improve your English speaking and reading skills
  • prepare for the interview
  • study for the citizenship test

We can also connect you to legal resources for help completing the citizenship application if needed.

Free literacy programs for adults and families

Since 1982, Literacy Pittsburgh has helped adults and families create better lives through learning in the greater Pittsburgh area. 

One-to-one tutoring options for adults


You can choose to meet one-to-one with a volunteer tutor in your neighborhood. Or, you can attend classes at our Downtown Center. 

A variety of learning programs to reach your goals


All programs are offered free of charge to individuals over age 18 who live in Allegheny County or Beaver County in Pennsylvania. 

New U.S. citizens gain the right to vote, hold public office and travel freely.

Student Spotlight: Emmanuel
Emmanuel resettled in the United States after fleeing violence in his home country of the Democratic Republic of Congo. His immediate goal upon coming to Pittsburgh was to attend college, but he lacked a high school diploma.
